Methane detectors are used to detect the presence of methane gas, which is a combustible and flammable gas. Underground mines, sewers, landfills, and other locations with an abundance of organic waste or decomposing organic material contain methane. Additionally, it is spontaneously emitted from some geological sources, such natural gas reserves.

Methane detectors are frequently employed in industrial settings to make sure that the levels of the gas don’t rise above what would be dangerous. Explosions or flames may occur if methane gas is present in hazardous proportions.

Catalytic sensors, infrared sensors, and other technologies are used by methane detectors to identify the presence of methane. A catalytic sensor, which heats up when it comes into touch with methane gas, is used by the majority of detectors. In order to warn staff members or technicians of the potential risk, the heat will force the detector to generate an audible alarm.
