The measurement of Iron within industrial processes is vital to protect equipment and infrastructure from excess formation of Iron which can cause both physical and chemical issues, depending on the process type.

Water quality is greatly effected by dissolved iron and can cause unpleasant taste and odor. This is particularly important within drinking water applications and beverage manufacturing. Municipal drinking water plants will often find high levels of Iron in source waters, and adopt methods for Iron removal to improve the quality of the final product. High iron can cause problems for the consumer with appliance staining, as well as unpleasant surface staining.

Waste water is usually regulated for allowable levels of dissolved iron and methods such as oxidization using Ozone or Potassium Permanganate for the removal of Iron need to be monitored for success, as well as ongoing record keeping of dissolved iron in water discharge levels.
