Chlorine gas has been used as a chemical weapon, so It’s safe handling and the ability to detect it before a leak becomes dangerous, is essential within many industries.

Chlorine (CL2) is used extensively as a water disinfectant, a bleaching agent and within other industries like pulp and paper.  Gas detectors capable of detecting CL2 within the PPB (Parts per billion) and PPM (Parts Per Million) range are essential for early warning signals to protect workers from exposure. Exposure can cause severe damage to the respiratory system, eyes and skin.

Where are Chlorine Gas Detectors Installed?

Because Chlorine Gas (CL2) is heavier than air, detectors are placed closer to the floor in locations where Gas cylinders are stored or where Cl2 can accumulate within industrial processes.

Why are detectors required when Chlorine has such a strong odor?

Once chlorine reaches the level where it can be seen it’s concentration is high enough to potentially cause death. At lower PPB levels chlorine is not detectable by the Human sense of smell, however workers exposed to a lower level of longer periods of time can still be injured. Therefore it’s wise to monitor levels to keep a record of exposure limits as well as a warning for dangerous levels.
