Chlorine dioxide is a compound with the chemical formula ClO2. It is a yellow-green gas above 11 °C, a reddish-brown liquid between 11 °C and -59 °C, and a light orange crystal below -59 °C. It is usually found within an aqueous solution and this is the state which chlorine dioxide instrumentation is used to control and monitor dosing levels. It’s also commonly used as a bleaching agent.
Recent developments have expanded its use in food processing and disinfectants.
The most common use of chlorine dioxide in water treatment is as a pre-oxidation agent prior to chlorination of drinking water. Accurate online instrumentation is essential in reporting the correct levels of chlorine dioxide within the water supply. Under disinfection is undesirable from a quality point of view, and over disinfection creates unnecessary waste and expense.
Chlorine dioxide is also used and measured using online instrumentation in industrial and wastewater water treatment. In Canada and other areas with active pulp mills chlorine dioxide is used as a bleaching agent and for slime control.
Chlorine dioxide also outperforms chlorine at pH values above 7. Chlorine dioxide is used as a biocide in many industrial water treatment applications, including cooling towers, treated water, and food processing.
Chlorine dioxide is superior to some other secondary water disinfection methods because it has a neutral pH and is unaffected by the silica and phosphates commonly used in drinking water corrosion inhibitors. However, in Canada it is not currently recommended as a secondary disinfectant.
It should also be noted that Chlorine Dioxide gas detection is commonly used within installations that use it as a disinfecting agent.
